How often should you bathe your dog? For Hound dogs no more than twice a year and for most others about quarterly. There are dog shampoos and dog hair conditioners mild enough and are formulated to help sensitive skin that you can use more often but, still no more than every eight weeks.

The best solution for reducing dog odor are dog wipes and dry dog shampoo; perfect for those people that feel they cannot wait that long to give their dog a bath. Both of these dog grooming supplies have ingredients that will moisturize your dog’s coat and skin while relieving hot spots. Hot spots are those areas where your dog continually scratches without seemingly any relief.

Dry Dog Shampoo-A Perfect Solution

Dry Dog Shampoo

We have a Plott hound that loves to play outside and role around in the grass. Because of the coat on our Plott, we cannot and should not bath her too often; about twice a year is recommended. Their coat has natural oils that protect her for the elements; however, she gets quite dirty and when she goes for swim that wet dog smell can be a little much.

We researched several different kinds of dry dog shampoo to find the perfect fit for our dog. Our search paid off with a dry dog shampoo we can apply daily that will not affect her flea & tick treatment, irritate her eyes, and still accomplish what we needed. You simply spray it on and towel dry. This dry dog shampoo keeps her clean and smelling great in between her regular dog grooming bath.

Furminator ShampooI purchased the small blue FURminator® brush with 1.7 inch blade along with the FURminator® Shampoo and FURminator Solution. I washed both dogs with the shampoo for 5 minutes each as directed. A ton of hair came off both dogs after the shampoo, about a fist-full each.

Next, I slathered them up with the solution, which smells like roses or some other floral scent and left that on for 5 minutes. Again, another fistful of hair came out with the rinse! I allowed both dogs a couple of hours to dry all the way, then came back and used the FURminator® dog brush.

Our Dog loves being brushed and let me go over her whole body except the sensitive areas with the tool. In addition, let me tell you, I took out a wad of superfine undercoat fur the size of her head off of that dog. Moreover, the only hair she’s leaving around the house is hair that was already all over the place prior to the FURminator® treatment. I don’t get hair flying off her when petting her anymore, and even the Rat Terrier that wouldn’t let me use the tool on him is still not putting out a lot of shedding.

The long and luxurious coat of the Irish Red and White Setter requires regular care to stay in excellent condition. furminator-dog-grooming-suppliesTo care for the flat, long coat of your heavy shedder groom them every day or every other day with a stiff bristle dog brush or pin brush. Always groom in the direction of hair growth.

You can give your Irish Red and White Setter a bath as required and will often actually enjoy it. Never use any type of human shampoo or conditioner, only use dog shampoo and dog grooming supplies. Human hair products have perfumes as well as a different pH level that can lead to skin conditions, rashes and irritation of the eyes and nose.

There are several dog shampoos and conditioners on the market to fill your every need. As this dog is a heavy shedder, try using a FURminator shampoo and Solution along with the FURminator brush. You will be amazed at how much hair will come off leaving smelling great not to mention little to no hair around the house.

My Dog Was Skunked

12 September;  Author: ILuvGriffons

dog-skunk-shampooAfter reading the last blog on this site, I started to look at dog shampoos. Two days later I was woken up by my wife telling me a skunk sprayed our dog. If you have ever had this happen to you then you know how bad the smell can be. It seems to permeate your very being.

Lucky for me my neighbor’s dog was skunked last week. I took precautions and purchased dog skunk shampoo remover. Good thing I did because there are not too many pet stores open at 5 o’clock in the morning.

The dog skunk shampoo worked great; no chemicals to just mask the smell it actually removed the odor and was not harmful to my dog’s eyes. Awesome stuff – I will always have a bottle on-hand.

Choosing The Right Dog Shampoo

10 September;  Author: Hrynewich

Dog ShampooEver wonder why you see some dogs with healthy shiny coats while your dog perhaps is dull and course. Diet does have an impact but a high quality dog shampoo is the real reason. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for, certainly holds true when it comes to dog shampoo.

I used to use the cheapest stuff out there and sometimes grabbed the “No More Tears” and used that for my dog shampoo. My dogs coat never looked top notch; she was scratching, had flakey skin, and never stayed clean looking for very long.

Once I made the switch to a top quality dog shampoo her coat began to brighten up, no more itchy dry flakey skin and she looked clean. Dog shampoo does not hurt their eyes, which is winner and it was not necessary to bath her more than once every other month. Over bathing, especially with cheap dog shampoo, can damage their coat and remove the protective properties a dogs coat provides.
