With temperatures, continuing to stay above the 90-degree mark your dog could be in danger. It does not seem the relief from the hot weather will come soon enough giving a much-needed break to our four legged family members.

Heat stroke and other health related issues not only affect pet parents they also affect our pets. To avoid serious health risks keep your dog indoors during the heat of the day with plenty of fresh cool water. Only let them out for exercise in early morning or after sunset and then only for short periods with cool water available.

There are plenty of portable dog water bottles available to pet parents for those owners that live in the city or for people that enjoy their morning run with their dog. Play it safe – no vigorous play or exercise perhaps some basic training to keep young minds occupied, have plenty of fresh cool water, and keep them indoors with air conditioning or a floor fan.

The Best Dog Pool Ramp

30 June;  Author: ILuvGriffons

Our dog loves to go swimming at the beach. This year we bought a new house that has an in ground swimming pool and the look on our dogs face told us he will be spending as much time in the pool as we will. One of the things we noticed is that he will have a rough time getting in and out.

So we decided to make it easy for him by installing a dog pool ramp. The ramp works great giving our dog the opportunity to swim and play in the pool and be able to get in and out with ease. Installation was a breeze with little to no training as our dog took to using the pool ramp right away.

With the summer temperatures rising, pet owners need to be aware of the dangers of leaving their dog unattended in the car. Most of us whom own dogs like to take them with us everywhere we can from short errands to visiting family and friends.

However, leaving your dog in the car even with a window cracked in the hot days of summer can severely dehydrate your dog even for short periods. Keeping a dog travel bowl filled with cool water is an inexpensive way to help keep your dog hydrated. To check for dehydration look at their gums, if they are dry then your dog is dehydrated.

While you should never leave your dog in a closed-up car for any length of time leaving the windows cracked and having cool water, available in a dog travel bowl will give you the time to make those short runs to the corner store.

The Perfect Pet First Aid Kit

9 June;  Author: Daily Wag

American Red Cross Pet First Aid KitsOur pets sometimes get themselves in sticky situations that end up needing a little first aid. Stepping on a sharp object or getting their paw caught is two of the most common. When this happens, remember to keep your dog calm, a reassuring voice works best. Next, grab your pet first aid kit.

How To Use A Dog Leash

9 May;  Author: Hrynewich

One of the most enjoyable aspects of dog ownership is walking your dog. The standard six-foot dog leash is what I use and all too often I see people walking their dog having trouble the whole time.  The main reason for this is that they only use one hand to hold the leash allowing the dog to walk in front instead of alongside.

The best way to use a six-foot dog leash is to use both hands; one hand in the loop end of the dog leash and the other about half way down leaving only enough slack to allow your dog to walk comfortably. This helps maintain control if your dog sees something he/she just needs to run after.

Most people think that paw protectors for their dog are only good for winter but rather they can protector your dog’s paws year round. The other day when I was walking my dog, we ran into some broken glass on the side of the road.

Of course, my dog almost walked right through it and instead we moved into the street and around the glass. It was one of those first hot sunny days and the asphalt was blazing hot. I was glad I still outfitted her with her paw protectors. I can only image what walking on hot asphalt would have done to the pads on her paws. With the temperatures heating up so will streets and sidewalks you use to walk your dog.

Spring is in the air and so is the under coat your dog is shedding. If you have a long-haired dog then you know this time year is when the heavy shedding season begins. One the ways we can reduce the amount of hair left behind is by using a deshedding tool.

Deshedding tools and dog brushes used daily during the shedding season will help remove the under coat, adding a deshedding dog shampoo into the equation will help even more. By using all of the deshedding tools available to dog owners, you can make this time of year a little more tolerable.

Many people ask why is it necessary to give Heartworm preventative all year when mosquitoes are only around during the summer. As Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal parasitic disease the preventative works better, when it is in your dogs system all year long.

If you have ever had a dog that has contracted heartworm the surgical procedure aside from being exceptional costly, is in itself dangerous for your dog. Often a dog recovering from this disease is never quite the same.

There are a couple of options available such as monthly tablets or a topical medication. There is another alternative although still in its infancy stages are a six-month injection. Whichever your method of prevention is, it is imperative to have an annual heartworm test completed from your vet.

Dog Play Pens The Right Choice

25 April;  Author: Daily Wag

Dog play pens can be a great way to keep track of your dog whether a new puppy or adult dog. One the issues small dog owners have is the danger of their dog being trampled or hurt when there is a house full of company.

Using your dog play pen outside during the warm weather season is the best choice for keeping your dog out of trouble. Some breeds especially those from the herding group will nip the elbows and legs of small children playing in the yard. There natural instinct to “herd” takes over and they will round up the kids.
